LONG KESH, Bobby Sands and Irish Hell is a 2019 comic book album that tells the story of the Northern Irish activist, his fights and his life in LONG KESH prison, the worst in Europe. The story begins when the young man has just been elected Member of Parliament while he is on a hunger strike. The Pope's emissary traveled with Cardinal O'Fiaich to persuade Bobby to give up his action. He then decides to tell his 5 years in prison to the clergyman.

LONG KESH, Bobby Sands et l'enfer irlandais est un album de bande dessinée sorti en 2019 qui raconte l'histoire du militant nord-irlandais, ses combats et sa vie dans la prison de LONG KESH, la pire d'Europe. L'histoire commence alors que le jeune homme vient d'être élu député tandis qu'il fait une grève de la faim. L'émissaire du pape s'est déplacé avec le cardinal O'Fiaich afin de persuader Bobby de renoncer à son action. Celui-ci décide alors de raconter ses 5 ans dans la prison à l'homme d'église.Today, while we are going to celebrate the 40 years of the first hunger strikes initiated by Brendan Hugues, leader of Catholic prisoners at LONG KESH, I decided to make an English version of the book, so that the Irish public and more generally English- speaking can also have access to this story. In its English version, the work is called simply LONG KESH, the subtitle Bobby Sands, Irish Hell appearing only on the title page.

Aujourd'hui, alors que l'on va célébrer les 40 ans des premières grèves de la faim initiées par Brendan Hugues, leader des prisonniers catholiques à LONG KESH, j'ai décidé de faire une version en anglais de l'ouvrage, afin que le public irlandais et plus généralement anglophone puisse aussi avoir accès à ce récit.

Dans sa version anglaise, l'ouvrage s'intitule simplement LONG KESH, le sous titre Bobby Sands, l'enfer irlandais apparaissant uniquement en page titre.This album was a great critical success in France and should appeal to people wishing to remember or discover this landmark episode of the war in Northern Ireland. Through this story, I tried to transcribe the climate of extreme violence that reigned within this prison code. Sands is the narrator, the hero, the pivot. The other main characters are Kieran Nugent, first Blanket men, Brendan Hugues, Sands sister, Marcella, Cardinal O'Fiaich and the matons. But the real hero of this story is the prison!

Cet album a connu un joli succès critique en France et devrait séduire les personnes désireuses de se souvenir ou de découvruir cet épisode marquant de la guerre en Irlande du nord. A travers ce récit, j'ai tenté de retranscrire le climat de violence extrême qui régnait au sein code cet établissement pénitentiaire. Sands en est le narrateur, le héros, le pivot. Les autres personnages principaux sont Kieran Nugent, premier Blanket men, Brendan Hugues, la soeur de Sands, Marcella, le cardinal O'Fiaich et les matons. Mais le vrai héros de ce récit, c'est la prison !Concretely, this comic book is composed of 4 cover pages in A5 format, on 300 grams paper, with square-glued spine. The interior consists of 156 color pages in A5 format, on 115 grams paper.

Concrètement, cet ouvrage est composé de 4 pages de couverture au format A5, sur papier 300 grammes, avec dos carré-collé. L'intérieur est composé de 156 pages couleur au format A5, sur papier 115 grammes.

Utilisation des dons

The donations will be used to finance the printing of the album. The album alone costs 21 pounds (23 euros), but I add a dedication and I number it, in order to proceed to a draw in the perspective of obtaining an original plate.

Qui suis-je ?

My name is Stéphane Heurteau. I live in Brittany, in Vannes and I am a comic book author-illustrator. In parallel with this activity, I am a teacher in animation cinema in Nantes.

Je m'appelle Stéphane Heurteau. Je vis en Bretagne, à Vannes et je suis auteur-illustrateur de bande dessinée. En parallèle de cette activité, je suis enseignant dans le cinéma d'animation à Nantes. 

I have always drawn and to date, I have produced about twenty comic books and as many illustrated or youth books. I am the screenwriter, among others of the Fanch Karadec series, the Breton investigator, who won the prize for best album at the Cognac thriller festival.

Je dessine depuis toujours et à ce jour, j'ai réalisé une vingtaine d'albums de bande dessinée et autant d'ouvrages illustrés ou jeunesse. Je suis le scénariste, entre autre de la série Fanch Karadec, l'enquêteur Breton, qui a obtenu le prix du meilleur album au festival du polar de Cognac. 

I am also the author of the Sant-Fieg diptych, published by Coop-Breizh editions, which won the prize for the best diptych, still in Cognac, and the prize for the best album and the favorite at the PENN AR BD festival in Quimper .

Je suis aussi l'auteur du diptyque Sant-Fieg, paru aux éditions Coop-Breizh, qui a obtenu le prix du meilleur dyptique, toujours à Cognac, et le prix du meilleur album et du coup de coeur au festival PENN AR BD à Quimper. 

A big travel fan, I am particularly interested in Celtic landscapes, in Brittany, of course, but also in Great Britain, especially in Scotland and Ireland, whose culture interests me the most. They represent the major part of the subjects of my works, as on Le prince de l'ennui (Itinérêve d'un gentilhomme d'amortune), which won the prize for the best first album in 2002, in Arles, or Hyde, tribute to the work of Stevenson, which won the prize for best album in Guadeloupe, in 2012.

Grand fan de voyage, je suis particulièrement intéressé par les paysages celtiques, en Bretagne, bien sûr, mais aussi en Grande Bretagne, notamment en Ecosse et en Irlande, dont la culture m'intéresse au plus haut point. Ils représentent la majeure partie des sujets de mes ouvrages, comme sur Le prince de l'ennui (Itinérêve d'un gentilhomme d'infortune), qui a obtenu le prix du meilleur premier album en 2002, à Arles, ou Hyde, hommage à l'oeuvre de Stevenson, qui a obtenu le prix du meilleur album en Guadeloupe, en 2012.

When I discovered the face of Bobby Sands in 1981, when I was a teenager, I had promised myself to make a book telling his story and that of his fellow prisoners, the Blanket-Men. This was done in 2019, first of all through an art-book describing the whole process and my various trips to Ireland.

En découvrant le visage de Bobby Sands en 1981, alors que j'étais adolescent, je m'étais promis de réaliser un ouvrage racontant son histoire et celle de ses compagnons d'incarcération, les Blanket-Men. Ce fut chose faite en 2019, tout d'abord par le biais d'un art-book décrivant toute lia démarche et mes divers voyages en Irlande.

The classic album appeared a few months later in the LONG BEC editions. Unfortunately, 3 months after its release, the publisher closed shop. However, I still wanted to make an English version. It is now done, but publication in a paper album will only be possible if the fundraising campaign is successful. One month left, I count on thank you in advance for your enthusiasm.

L'album classique paraissait quelques mois plus tardaux éditions du LONG BEC. Hélas, 3 mois après sa sortie, l'éditeur fermait boutique. Cependant, je souhaitais toujours réaliser une version en anglais. C'est aujourd'hui chose faite, mais la parution en album papier ne sera possible que si la campagne de financement réussit. Il reste, un mois, je compte sur vous remercie par avance de votre enthousiasme.
