Our "Project Brioc" aims at reenacting and reconstructing the life of those by the sea in the Middle-Ages in Brittany. Brioc is a corracle, that is a boat made of leather on a frame of wood. It was built in the 90's.

This type of boat was commonly used from the 6th century to the 16th century by the Irish and the Bretons too, mainly for transporting goods and people.

In the course of the summer 2018, we set out to sail around Brittany from Gwiseni, in the North-West, to Dinan, in the North-East, where we were expected to take part in the "Gouel ar mogerioù-kreñv", a medieval festival. We then began to make our way down the canals of Ille-et-Rance to reach the sea again in La Roche-Bernard. There, we took local wine and salt as cargo which we then sold again at the medieval festival in Pontekroaz on the 9th of September. We then made our way to our home harbour.
The primary goal of our summertime travels was to learn how to sail Brioc. We now wish to refurbish the sails in order to fit in with the period in order to, later on, sail to the northern countries, among them England and Sweden. Most notably Visby in Sweden, where an important battle took place in the 14th century.

The money we will receive will be used to fund the restoration of the boat, which has become necessary after more than 20 years of living history. A few pieces of leather need to be replaced, but our main goal is to switch out the sails. The restored boat will continue to be used to sail with all of those interested, experts and beginners alike. The sails, which are currently lug sails, will be switched out for square rigs, as they should be. In order to do that, we will use natural fibers and will call upon the work of breton sail makers : the goal is to execute most of the work by hand. Most of the materials we'll be using will be locally sourced, in brief it will be Breton craft for Breton History.

We are an association of reenactment and Living History called Ar Soudarded ("the soldiers" in breton). We mainly focus on two periods : the 10th and the 14th century in Brittany. We aim at reenacting period-fighters of these two centuries, their fighting techniques, way of dress and eating habits. We specify in reenacting lowly people and mercenaries rather than high-born people. Our association is getting known, and me now travel further across Europe, most notably to Hastings in England and to Germany. Our primary goal is to make History into a living thing, both with Brioc at sea, but also during the year in medieval festivals. We carry out advanced research in order to do so, both on clothing and eating habits.
You can reach us via Facebook on our main page "Ar Soudarded", but also on our ship's page "Tro Brioc" where you can follow her news.
